Japan’s proposed iPS-cell approvals for heart failure and Parkinson’s disease

An advisory panel to Japan’s health ministry has recommended limited marketing approval for therapies utilizing induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells aimed at treating heart failure and Parkinson’s disease. This development marks a significant advancement in the application of iPS cell technology in regenerative medicine, potentially offering new treatment options for patients affected by these conditions. Additionally, the field of stem cell medicine is evolving with other trials harnessing embryonic stem (ES) cells made from human embryos, rather than adult cells. Alan Trounson, a pioneer in the stem cell field and professor emeritus at Monash University, states that stem cell-based medicine has “come of age.”
